Widening the curriculum that our students are exposed to on a regular basis is an important yet challenging task. What they are exposed to as learners sets the stage and foundation for how they will perceive of the world around them and how they will interact with it throughout the rest of their lives. Most of our students have heard of Marco Polo, but how many of them know who Nawab Sikandar Begum or Ibn Jubayr were? These, too, were important world travelers in their own right.

My own foray into graduate school stemmed from a thirst to learn more about historical moments, places, figures, and ideas that never made their way into my textbooks.
